On Threshold Circuits for Parity Ramamohan Paturi and Michael E. Saks* Department of Computer Science and Engineering University of California, San Diego; La Jolla, Ca 92093 Motivated by the problem of understanding the limitations of neural networks for representing Boolean functions, we consider sizedepth trade-offs for threshold circuits that compute the parity function. We give an almost optimal lower bound on the number of edges of any depth-2 threshold circuit that computes the parity function with polynomially bounded weights. The main technique we use in this proof, which is based upon the theory of rational approximation, appears to be a potentially useful technique for the analysis of such networks. We conjecture that

Average-Case Lower Bounds and Satisfiability Algorithms for Small Threshold Circuits

We show average-case lower bounds for explicit Boolean functions against bounded-depth thresh-old circuits with a superlinear number of wires. We show that for each integer d > 1, there isεd > 0 such that Parity has correlation at most 1/nΩ(1) with depth-d threshold circuits whichhave at most n1+εd wires, and the Generalized Andreev Function has correlation at most 1/2nwith ...

Switched-Capacitor Dynamic Threshold PMOS (SC-DTPMOS) Transistor for High Speed Sub-threshold Applications

This work studies the effects of dynamic threshold design techniques on the speed and power of digital circuits. A new dynamic threshold transistor structure has been proposed to improve performances of digital circuits. The proposed switched-capacitor dynamic threshold PMOS (SC-DTPMOS) scheme employs a capacitor along with an NMOS switch in order to effectively reduce the threshold voltage of ...

Reversible Logic Multipliers: Novel Low-cost Parity-Preserving Designs

Reversible logic is one of the new paradigms for power optimization that can be used instead of the current circuits. Moreover, the fault-tolerance capability in the form of error detection or error correction is a vital aspect for current processing systems. In this paper, as the multiplication is an important operation in computing systems, some novel reversible multiplier designs are propose...

Size and Energy of Threshold Circuits Computing Mod Functions

Let C be a threshold logic circuit computing a Boolean function MODm : {0, 1}n → {0, 1}, where n ≥ 1 and m ≥ 2. Then C outputs “0” if the number of “1”s in an input x ∈ {0, 1}n to C is a multiple of m and, otherwise, C outputs “1.” The function MOD2 is the so-called PARITY function, and MODn+1 is the OR function. Let s be the size of the circuit C, that is, C consists of s threshold gates, and ...

The Complexity of Computing Symmetric Functions Using Threshold Circuits

Beame, R., E. Brisson and R. Ladner, The complexity of computing symmetric functions using threshold circuits, Theoretical Computer Science 100 (1992) 2533265. This paper considers size-depth tradeoffs for threshold circuits computing symmetric functions. The size measure used is the number of connections or edges in the threshold circuits as opposed to the number of gates in the circuits. The ...
